Fruit of the Spirit - Faithfulness

Our first devotional on Faithfulness is from Auntie Ruth, a member of the English congregation. She has served as a Sunday school teacher for many years and has taught many of our current young adults! She shares a little bit about her story and the importance of trusting in Christ along with some scripture!

Loyal & Devoted - Ruth Chiu (English Congregation)

Growing up in a Christian home, memorizing scriptures and going to Sunday Schools were the regular things I did as a kid.  I remembered my dad would ask me to repeat what I heard in Sunday Service and honestly, I was not paying much attention. Did I know God is real?  Of course, we lived and breathed his promises everyday as stated in Philippians 4:19.  I have witnessed countless miracles where God provided for us.  My relationship with God was like Jacob with God in Genesis 32:9 – I prayed when I was in trouble.   I never made him the Lord of my life until much later in life.

Faithfulness means loyal and devoted.  Faithfulness also means trusting God in knowing what is best for us.  It was easy when things were going well.  It was not so easy when things were not going as I planned.  I questioned God so many times and asked my many “Why Lord?”.  You know the scripture Proverb 3:5-6, every kid in Sunday School memorized – which begins with “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding; In all your ways acknowledge Him, And He shall direct your paths.”

Allow me to share one story of my life.  After I graduated from University, things were going great.  I was getting a promotion almost every two years.  Then I saw a job that I really like and felt it fit me perfectly.  Inside me, I really thought I was the best candidate.  When the news came that I was not selected to fill the role, I was quite frustrated with God.  I said why not?

Remember the scripture said, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart and lean not on your own understanding”.  Following my disappointment, I repeatedly thinking what did I do wrong?  God was telling me to continue trusting and acknowledge Jesus as my Lord even through my disappointment.

Fast forward a few years later.  I found out the lady who got the job quit.  Apparently, the job was stressful, and the work environment was very political. In the meantime, I got a better opportunity which prepared me for more advancements.  If I would have gotten the first job that I wanted, I would not have landed in the best job God has prepared for me years after.
